My personal impression is that, despite its dire economic plight, the Ukraine emanates a great deal of buoyancy and enjoyment of life. The people's hospitality, the lushness of the vegetation, the untrammelled life of the Hutsul people - the "wild Ukrainians", who live in the Carpathians, and the often bizarre intrusions of western influences and traditional lifestyles.
