Right from the title Incognita (Unknown) recalls the particular relationship of correlation and dissociation that is established between known realities and their recomposed image in Luca Gilli's photographs. The immediate intuition of the artistic meaning of Gilli's photographs - which goes beyond the documentary function of the project on the school in times of lockdown - is produced starting from the recognition of the familiarity of the objects - desks, blackboards, gyms, computers, chairs - and their immediate disavowal, which places them in an alternative dimension, in a realm of beauty, in turn based on a personal code and yet also immediately recognizable. The most evident transfiguring element of reality is the light that floods objects and places; it is the intensity of white that reaches the limit of negation and dissolves the customary nature of objects to the point of almost burning away any possibility of perception. There are images in which luminosity and whiteness are taken to such extremes that two blackboards and a window merge together, others in which an ordinary environment with no openings becomes a sort of shiny cube [...]. Light, a natural element, thus becomes the most evident sign of the artist's intervention, pointing out the artefactual character of photography, because only by resorting to technological instruments is it possible to obtain those luminosity and rarefactions.
