Born in Lower Austria, Michael Höpfner has been traveling for decades through remote regions of the world such as the plateaus in Tibet, the river courses in Albania or through valleys in the Alps. He walks through the landscapes on foot in weeks-long marches and records them photographically, in drawings and diary notes. Höpfner sees his wanderings as a search for a human relationship with nature. In the works he tells of silence, lack of words and loneliness, of existential experiences, both physical and mental, of simple orders of magnitude such as time and space, emptiness and distance.

"Walking, as I do, is always an artistic act that rebels, protests, wants to rewrite the experienced ... also against contemporary ideological and social views," emphasizes Höpfner. "Going for me is also an evasion from existing patterns. As an artist, I did not want to go to the studio, but out in search of the lost relationship with nature. This alienation has always been an impulse for me. "
