Spanish photographer Alberto García-Alix has devoted his career to black-and-white photography as personal and social documentation. This photographic essay was produced in the Chilean city of Valparaiso in the summer of 2015, during his residency for the International Festival of Photography in Valparaiso. Sifting through the streets and hills of this bustling port city, he extracts from its myriad sights numerous tightly framed urban details and close, almost confrontational encounters with its inhabitants. In this way, women, dogs, and pelicans all become the striking faces of García-Alix’s shots of a seemingly unintelligible cityscape.
