For 500 years, in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, every September 24th, the feast day of Our Lady of Mercy, a pilgrimage has taken place, where each family builds their own "Panzudo" (Feast of Our Lady of Mercy) to represent their sins: the more sins a person has to atone for, the bigger and uglier their outfit will be.
Through text and images, this photobook takes us through the tunnels of domestic space to explore its psychological density and the complexity of childhood, fusing it with pre-Hispanic traditions and apocalyptic visions of the Catholic religion.
This series addresses, from a contemporary perspective, the cultural syncretism that marks the history of Mexico. The Panzudos continue to dance each year through the streets of San Cristóbal de las Casas, now with Halloween masks and Chinese fabrics, creating new characters from the imaginary of contemporary Mexico.
