Since their beginnings in the 1960s, the photographic work of Bernd Becher (1931-2007) and Hilla Becher (1934-2015) has not only been the subject of formal aesthetic discussions and analyses, but has now itself become an indispensable part of recent art history. Their approach to the medium of photography, which is oriented towards the vocabulary of the visible and remained systematically true to its subject - industrial architecture - for decades, established a new tradition of documentary photography, whose initiators and pioneers they are considered to be today. On the occasion of the major Becher retrospective at New York's Metropolitan Museum (July to October 2022), we are reissuing two classics from our Becher Edition: Bernd & Hilla Becher. The Life and Work of Susanne Lange and Bernd & Hilla Becher. Typologies.
Typologies, published in 2003 as a catalogue of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, has become a standard work of our house. It contains 130 - and thus almost all existing - compilations of individual photographs of the same building types as tableaus. The Bechers prepared a total of twelve subject groups of industrial buildings, from water towers to factory buildings, in typologies with different numbers. The abundance of material condensed in this way - all in all 1528 photographs - allows a comparative view and unites scientific systematics and aesthetic empiricism.
